Goal
  • write as nice & clean HTML as possible (aka, still looks awesome without CSS/images)
  • use only CSS for styling
  • use images only as an exception (category banners, icons, etc)

Spent some time today in photoshop trying out different approaches to new cuenation design.
Didn't pay much attention to colors and the looks, just focused on the general layout and typography.
99% HTML/CSS, all images combined are less than 2KB:

was doing some mock HTML/CSS and apparently the design above is quite easy to style. see the screenshots below.

1024px wide monitor w/ no CSS: http://imgur.com/ZPyr1.png
1024px wide monitor w/ CSS: http://imgur.com/EtEQe.png
1920px wide monitor w/ CSS: http://imgur.com/C6YwF.png

the fluid layout scales quite nicely for any monitor, including cellphones. i'd say not bad for just 340 lines of CSS code :P

PS: i didn't style the shoutbox yet, its 5AM and im too dam tired to even bother atm, lol. will finish it up soon.

Looks nice but two questions:
1. there are no category banners, are you willing to remove them? (please don't :)
2. maybe you should do something with title: instead of "a state of trance episode xxx .... " just write "Episode xxx" ?
It will save you a lot of space.

i tried excluding the Artitst/Set titles but then the whole page started looking like a mess. also, repeating set titles helps with SEO =D

I don't like the banners in home section and in categories section; but some like it.
Banners could be an option : enable/disable banners when you're log in.

Give some choices for the main menu color when you're log in.
The shoutbox should not be 50miles long like we can see on some pages.

Direct download directly from the home page would be awesome !
No more than 2KB - wow ! good work this is perfect

Really great job for the ''now version'' website. I hope to see the new ''in-shape'' website soon !

In general repeating same text is bad. When search engine bot come across text like this "Armin van Buuren is a famous DJ. Armin van Buuren born on 25 dec. Armin van Buuren started to mix when he was 16", it dosn't consider "there a lot into about Armin in this text" any more. More over, it might think this text is a SEO thing and a page end up with lower rank. :)

For Mobilephones etc...
<code>
<style media="handheld" type="text/css">
@import url("/handheld.css");
</style>
</code>
http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS2/media.html#at-media-rule for more information.

Having fluid designs has its good and bads, too big of a screen and information is suddenly more spread out than you might want.
Sure it gives more space to work with, but its not optimal.

What's going on with this? Do you need help to get it implemented?

i was working on this and then got loaded with ton of work and my job... since then i haven't touched the design. tho i do want to finish it someday. either way, the php should come first and only then we'll worry about the html/css layout. our server is pulling near constant 100% cpu due to the current code :D

Okay, well I will chip in where I can. So long as there is transparency on the forum, I'll be able to deduct where I will be most useful.

Would it help server load if all the images were smaller in filesize? If so I will run all the jpg's through http://www.jpegmini.com. Seriously an incredible little webapp, that preserves the quality 100% and reduces the size dramatically.
